OMG we saw the same movie! And we agree with you 100%. My husband and me both loved stage Wicked. Just first half is better, but still a wonderful night at the theater—with the original cast, heaven. OK, after 10 minutes, this wasn’t in the broadway show…….wait, they’re not going to dance again are they? There’s more dancing in this musical than in a ballet! Wait what are these nothing songs/dialogue they added? Oh god, how much longer is this? When is Gravity coming? We got Gravity in pieces, wait part 2, will it start with the non stop version, no running around just the song as it should have been? So no, we didn’t love it. My husband bailed before gravity, I had to yell, he Ted, gravity is happening. I remember at the Academy Awards thinking, surprised Wicked isn’t winning. Ah costumes were great. I know for sure something they’d never win, EDITING! Was there any editing? I’d like to see what they left out, it can’t be much! I so look forward to seeing this, I was told movie theaters like two part movies, if you saw part one you will come back for part two. Fool me once……I’m not coming back!
idk why "hey, Ted, Gravity is happening!" just hit my funny bone correctly but I'm LOLing. I am glad I am not the only one, I felt crazy. Everyone was like JUST WAIT TILL THE END. Well I did. I waited for two hours and twenty minutes for it. And....eeesh.
So much agreement with you. A thoroughly “meh” nearly three hours I’ll never get back, except for the revelation that is Cynthia Erivo. So glad we didn’t spend 20 bucks
I was on the fence but now that I read this, I'm out. Thank you for the time save. And thank you for pointing out the intended audience for the book was children. Often when I don't like something that everyone raves about I can only say stuff like "I would have loved it if I was nine?"
the movie wasn't BAD by any means, it just suffered from the bloat and nonsense that movies have been suffering from for a while. Truly a "just because you can doesnt mean you should" situation.
Excellent, this confirms I'm not crazy for not being crazy about this movie. This whole time, I was wondering what the heck I missed that everyone else saw. I saw it the day after it came out because someone invited me to go. I wouldn't have seen it otherwise, however, I did enjoy being "in the know" when everyone started talking about it.
I've not seen the musical, but I've seen the original movie many times (meaning, I'm familiar with the story, and I know there is no comparison).
I can't speak from a musical comparison or a theater technical perspective, but I felt that Ariana Grande was just channeling Margot Robbie's Barbie (I didn't like that movie either, gasp) and I didn't like that I didn't know (no one knew) that it was a 2-parter. They lost me on that point alone. I agree with Tom, I'm not coming back.
I thought the ending was powerful, but after reading your review, I could see how it could have been done better/differently. Cynthia Erivo deserves all the accolades she receives - she was the star of the movie, and seeing her made this long movie worth it.
oh I LOVED Barbie but I see what you mean. She was also channeling Kristen Chenowith, who originated the role.
The ending is powerful because of the source material. As I said, it was built into the thing. I just...idk I feel like the art of knowing when to go hard and when to pull it back and let the work shine is underrated.
I mostly saw the touring Wicked about 3 years ago in my city and then Wicked movie because I loved Defying Gravity. They truly destroyed the momentum of the song in this version! I did love the performances at The Oscars.
generally I don’t like Ariana Grande and it made it harder for me to appreciate this movie. But I love Cynthia Ervio in this role! I waited until the weekend before Christmas to see it and kept hearing how fantastic it was so I thought I might like it more than I expected.

I’m with you and I haven’t seen the musical. It was nyeh. I can’t see myself forking out dosh for part two.

and yes, I would have LOVED it if i was like, 12.
I haven't seen it yet, but enjoyed your review here. I'll be looking for all that.

I have barely seen this opinion anywhere so I am relieved! Granted, I didn't do a Deep Dive but everyone I know loved it.
I seriously think I would have forgiven the rest of it if they stuck the landing. Alas.
